Hello! A few years ago I discovered the fun hobby of painting with watercolors and the Hake brush and started learning from the teachings of Ron Ranson. I want to inspire others to paint using a fast, loose & fun technique. I am also an admin of the Facebook group The Ron Ranson Disciples.
Another Watercolor Waterfall
Hey folks I am taking a bit of a summer break but I will have some fresh content soon. In the meantime enjoy this made up waterfall scene.
With the waterfall I used a few things but also experimented with scraping away some paper as an alternative to using white.
As always thanks for watching and I will see you soon.
Thanks for watching everyone. Below I have some affiliate links to some of my favorite products I use for my art. Clicking these links and making a purchase I get a small percentage which i use to purchase more art products to make these videos. Using the links costs you nothing.

In this video I paint a nice scene for you with some nice scraping details. I mixed a little music and conversation in this one and I hope you enjoy it and are inspired to pick up a brush. Next one I will turn down the mix a bit and edit a little better. I kinda like the vibe. Thanks for watching everyone. Love it! Thank you Joe:)
I'm just flabbergasted that you can make up scenery like this. I love it
Thanks. After you paint hundreds of scenes it’s easy to just move pieces around, trees, grass, water, mountains etc.
@@joemenzaarthopefully that's me one day 😂
If someone does it every day or nearly every day for an hour it will become second nature. The problem as artists we are never happy with our work even when we get better so we have to learn to appreciate ourselves in the now.
Amazing Joe I have seen many of your videos and find it really helpful in how you seem only using a fan brush create an inspirational piece of work, thanks greatly appreciate you sharing with us
Thanks it’s such a versatile brush.
Bob Ross of Watercolour. Thanks for sharing Joe always appreciate your work 👍
Such a cool thing to be called since I started as a Bob Ross fan, never knew I’d achieve that. Thanks!
@joemenzaart It's true you always turn those watercolours into oils, don't know how you do that my friend 😉
Love it Joe, going to do my version sending love from England
Thanks would love to see the result
I think the sky problem is because, doing it first, the retardant and water was still too wet. It had time to dry by the time we got to the mountains. ? Also, while you were laying it in, on the sky, I felt like you needed a heavier dose of the blue on the brush. I noticed that those streaks were going to be there before you moved on.
Thanks, this video is a few years old now and I mostly painted in watercolor so I was pretty new to the medium and trying paints sent to me by the myartscape company. If I remember correctly. Thanks for the comments
@@joemenzaart Yes. It was really only because you had said that you weren’t as certain about the acrylics as you are water paints that I had the … courage … to add my input.
@@starrdusk1 yes thank you so much for the input and comments much appreciated!
They have white in a larger jar that can be purchased separately.
Yes I have the acrylic jars which I got after making the video
@@joemenzaart I got that... after I got further in to the video. I spoke to soon. Thanks. I enjoyed the video.
Wonderful!
Thanks for that lesson. A hake is one of my lesser used brushes…quite frankly, it scared me…but you have given me the know how and courage to use it.
Thanks for the comment. It can be a bit intimidating using a large brush at first but if you let go it does all the heavy lifting for you.
Joe Mensa, you are magic!
I’m relatively a beginner, decided to try larger paper and this was very helpful to me because I’m going to purchase my first Hake brush. Very helpful.
Hello, I found 9x12 is a good minimal starting point for the hake for a beginner because you do want the freedom to move the big brush around. Happy painting!
One of my favorite paintings so far! Absolutely lovely!
Thank you I did it on the fly but I liked it as well.
It always amazes me how your "scribbles" with a fan brush end up stunning, every single time!!!
Good observation it is like scribbling which is probably why I like doing it. Thanks for watching!
You should have scrapped in some water lines 😎👍this was VERY helpful to watch! I love the rocks ✌️
You’re right. Sometimes you have to keep a running inventory of options in mind when painting. Glad you enjoyed.
I love how you paint & talk while painting. Its so relaxing. Can't wait to try this one & the waterfall one too. Thank you so muh. From mary in ireland. ❤
Hello Mary in Ireland 🇮🇪 thank you very much happy painting
whats the song name? beautiful art btw
Thank you, song title at the bottom of the video
@@joemenzaart thanks, i didnt even notice the little square
@SnowfallAlaska it’s tiny easy to miss
Hell ya, both the view and tha art are incredible
Truly beautiful, good song choice as well 😊
Very nice Joe. I recorded a waterfall video this morning too but won't be up till Tuesday But yours is better😂
Thanks but remember yours is uniquely you. Think in those terms. And how much you enjoyed creating.
You made rocks out of nothing!! My mind is blown!!!! :)
Thanks, an entire painting from nothing 😀 give it a try
Joe your expertise may not be realism but it is joy through emotion

Hawaii?
@@joemenzaart thinking of c s Lewis😊
@@andrewbrimmer1797 oh the other Narnia 😁😉
@@joemenzaart you are just so young lol
I’m totally familiar with CS Lewis read all of his work. I was joking. 🙃
How does the have brush handle acrylic paints?
It works but remember acrylic can be harsh on the goat hair so use at your own risk and wash the brush well
@@joemenzaart thanks
Hey Everyone I hope you enjoy this video. At one point I did change up the bottom of the waterfall I tried to make some splashes but I washed it away for the final result you see at the end. Remember to check out my description and of course leave a comment if I have inspired you. Have a great Memorial day weekend.
♥
Joe, I'm very impressed with how you were able to use the little Cotman travel set to create such a beautiful painting! Very inspiring!
Thank you, it’s a challenge on these small palettes but I find them super convenient to carry around and just start painting.
It looked great with the path and great with just the indigo and great with the white any one if these was fantastic. What are thoughts on metallic paints and on pastels
Yes just showing various ways you can make this
@@joemenzaart cool
Is that Elrond peeking at us?😊
You sent the link for this and I find this is a great job both to inspire and teach
Great to hear and you mentioning it I went to look for it and saw it had a low number of views so hopefully more people will find it. Thanks!
I kept saying to myself......"Joe stop fiddling". I was wrong....end result as usual nice work. Have enjoyed your videos for quite some time. Thank you!
Thanks I do fiddle and the struggle is real!
The ending song sounds like Sgt Pepper Within you without you😂
There’s a big library of free music I could use, I wish it had more mainstream choices like that.
This pic is great as usual and thanks for the link
Do you ever use a sponge
I have used it before it’s good to have in your art supplies.
ua-cam.com/video/IrU4X2oxwP4/v-deo.htmlsi=HeO4w4h84XmJp2cz
Did anyone pickup on the paint Joe is using. Just goes to show you that getting your chops down and technique is more important than using expensive paint!
You are right Bob and I purposely use cheaper paints because I feel that most folks will pick up from Wal mart or similar places to try it out. But you really don’t need expensive paint especially as a hobby. Thanks for the comment.
Amazing iwanna try too
Great painting. They also make solvents that are non-toxic and they make a solution to dry your painting faster
True I’ve used the stuff to make it dry fast but oils and acrylics are still messier imo.
@@joemenzaart very true sir
I loved Frank Clark’s series, he helped me learn how to paint in watercolour. Very sad when he passed. Now I found your channel and love the way you talk us through what your doing. Thank you.
Thank you for your comment. I’m glad you enjoy these videos.
I watch your channel on and off. I love the hake style and the vibe it gives. Super cool bud. Keep it up.
Thank you much appreciated.
Hey everyone thanks for watching, be sure to check out the description for more information. In the video I mentioned Hobby Lobby as a good source for inexpensive supplies and their house brand which is pretty decent for the price, their Master's touch brand. At my HL location you can still buy full size sheets of Canson, Bockingford, etc. and cut them down to any size you like but so far I have only seen the Canson Graduate paper at Wal mart and on Amazon as well. Make sure to go to Hobby Lobby on days when the Master's touch is on sale!
Cool!
This is so cool. Are you working from pans?
Yes I really like the convenience and I just fill them as needed
@@joemenzaart thank you for sharing. Very inspiring
@@TranquilityinArt Thanks for watching. The pan set I used in in the description.
So good to watch and listen to your words of wisdom. Having fun with paints and brushes is my goal for today😊
Thanks much appreciated. Not so sure about wisdom just my thoughts 🧐💭
Maybe my favorite as well
